Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Assorted food coloring red, green, blue, etc
  • Royal icing store-bought or homemade

Instructions:

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt

In a separate large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy

Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until well combined

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until a dough forms

Divide the dough into equal parts, depending on how many colors you want

Add a few drops of food coloring to each portion of dough, kneading it until the color is evenly distributed

Wrap each colored dough in plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour

Preheat your oven to the appropriate temperature usually 350F or 180C

On a floured surface, roll out each colored dough to about 1/4 inch thickness

Using gift-shaped cookie cutters, cut out cookies from each colored dough

Arrange the cut-out cookies on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper

Bake the cookies for 8-10 minutes or until the edges are lightly golden

Allow the cookies to cool completely on a wire rack

Prepare the royal icing according to the package instructions or your preferred recipe

Decorate the cooled cookies with the royal icing, creating stacked gift designs

Let the icing set before serving or gifting these festive cookies
